Remind children that if they eat their marshmallows, they’ll have fewer materials for building.Instead, ask children to make observations about their bridge and its performance. Refrain from offering your opinions on their bridge.Let the children try, fail, and succeed on their own merit. As the caregiver, stay as hands-off as you can throughout the project. Some toothpicks will be stronger than others. Testing Materials: Small Toy Car, Weights (e.g., coins, nuts, and washers, etc.), Towers (e.g., two stacks of books) You may be thinking, 'It's a toothpick, they're all the same.' Unfortunately, that is not the case.Cardstock, Construction Paper, or Cardboard (the road for the bridge).Stale Mini-Marshmallows (about 50 per bridge).Just be sure not to eat all of your marshmallows before you’re done! What You’ll Need: Elmer's glue is pretty inferior for this. Bent it a little to make sure it doesn't snap instantly. Make sure your toothpick isn't too brittle. Build it as uniform and thick as possible. Perform multiple tests and improve your design. The spacing between the intersections of toothpicks greatly affects the strength of your toothpick bridge. Become an engineer and design your bridge before you start building it. What is a bridge? Why are triangles the strongest shape? Why do so many bridges look alike?
